Welcome to the website of the British Hallmarking Council.

Hallmarking is an ancient method of safeguarding consumers, and the word itself, stemming from 'marking goods at the (Goldsmiths) Hall' has its origins far back in time.

Hallmarking involves testing articles made of precious metal and marking them to indicate that they are of a minimum standard of purity.

Nowadays hallmarking is carried out in the UK not only by the London Assay Office, at Goldsmiths Hall, but also by the Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield Assay Offices.

We hope this site will communicate the function and importance of hallmarking today - if further information is needed, please contact the Secretary, or one of the Assay Masters.
